so once upon a time (some months ago) i wrote up a big ol draft dreamwidth post going over all my old fanfics that i had currently posted. and then i never saved it. and then dreamwidth glitched and i lost the whole thing. but i liked the idea! so i'm going to try and write it again now, because i think this is a neat platform and i want to post more stuff here. i've been recovering from a minor concussion so now's the perfect time right
without further ado, here is my thoughts on all 9 works i've posted on ao3 in the last year and a half (give or take):
A Small Blue Pocket Universe Learns About Herself, Love, Her Friends, And Also Whole Foods (May '22)
this is, to the best of my knowledge, the first fanfic that i ever actually finished? i got really into young avengers a year or two before writing this (primarily the Kieron Gillen/Jamie McKelvie 2013 run) and specifically the (gay gay homosexual gay) relationship between kate bishop and america chavez (which is why they cameo in the epilogue to this fic). that eventually led me to Runaways, which i read the entire 2000s run of and then attempted to follow the characters as they split in the early 10s through Murderworld and eventually A-Force (before reuniting in the 2017 series, which i...still haven't finished oops). i hated murderworld, but i LOVED a-force, and especially the character of Singularity, who doesn't really show up anywhere else to the best of my knowledge. so then i was like "what if she and Nico Minoru (who she Loves A Whole Lot) were gay for each other for a while" and i wrote 10k words about it.
frankly i'm still quite pleased with this one! there are bits that i don't like as much, there are characterizations that i think are sort of weirdly flat (dazzler deserves better than the amount of screentime i gave her here), but all in all i really like it and am quite proud of it. for a first published fanfic i think it's quite a good one!! maybe i should write more a-force, it's horribly underrepresented on ao3...
Shut Up And Let Me Save Your Life (Aug '22)
and so begins the fire emblem...
real talk i always forget i wrote this, mostly because i banged it out from a vague idea in about 48 hours, posted it with very little editing, and then moved on with my life. i really like the characters of kris and katarina in new mystery of the emblem (and i really like that game in general!), so it was inevitable that i would write some gay shit about them. slightly less inevitable that it was going to be sort of angsty and violent - i feel like i don't usually go for angsty and violent, and as such when i look back on this fic i'm a little less happy with how it turned out than i could be. still, it's fun, and i'm glad i wrote (and posted) it.
Meetings, Manifestations, and Manaketes (Sep '22)
okay it is FUCKED UP that i only wrote this a year ago??? what the hell??? feels like way longer.
this is the second of the two "well i just had this idea for a short new mystery of the emblem fic! time to write it immediately", and i like it a lot more. it's got marth!! hi marth!! and it's got tiki!!! i am always a huge fan of the character archetype of "small child who has something unearthly about them/knows too much", and i'm also always a huge fan of parenting in fics. and then i realized that tiki, small dragon child, does not actually have any canon support conversations with nagi, Woman Who Is Probably Her Mother And Also Maybe God??, and i was like hey that's fucked up!!! time to write a weird melancholic scene with the two of them interacting immediately before the end of the game. also bantu and marth are there. i feel like my marth characterization is a little shoddy here, but also marth often gets barely any characterization beyond He's A Nice Guy (as is the curse of old fire emblem characters), so whatever. i like this one! i'll reread it sometime.

AHAHAHA GONCHAROV
so, to set the scene. it is november 20th 2022. this thing called "goncharov" has been going around tumblr as a running joke for about 24 hours or so, i don't know i'm not gonna look up exact dates i don't really care. but it's picking up absurd amounts of steam. you (me) decide "hey wouldn't it be funny to write a fanfic about this?" so you look up the tag's popular posts, you grab various random things that seem notable - katya, sofia, the boat scene, moon symbolism? unclear, but whatever. time to roleplay as someone who makes popular fanfics for a hot minute! you write this up in a couple hours, maybe, give it a quick edit and a goofy song lyric title (something you would never do normally), and post it. it's the second fic in the tag. "fuck yeah!" you think, "50% f/f representation in goncharov!"
you go to bed.
in the morning your email inbox is full of emails from ao3. everyone and their mother has left kudos AND a comment on this fic, including several authors who you are a huge fan of. you are fangirling a little bit (okay, a lot bit - you text your friend in a mild panic about it). on tumblr you realize how this happened: in the night, someone had gone on ao3 to find there were already 3 fics in the Goncharov (1973) tag, and made a post about it, screenshotting those three fics including yours. oh god. wow. holy shit. oh my god.
i am still getting occasional email notifications from people giving kudos to this fic. i banged it out in an hour. it is my most popular fic on ao3 by a HUGE margin. i forget i wrote it literally all of the time. what the fuck.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem: The Anime (Nov '22-present)
the big one!! the passion project!!
i first discovered that fire emblem had a (short-lived and BAD) OVA anime adaptation from the 90s around september or october i think? then i was like "haha what if i wrote another episode of it, for fun?" then i introduced a friend to the anime at a bad anime night, she got REALLY invested in the character of navarre, and convinced me to keep writing. here we are today, 60,000 words later. more, actually - i still have a completed chapter i haven't posted for this yet, and i'm working on the next one. i have put SO MUCH MORE time and effort into this one than any of my other fics, which is basically for one reason: this, my retelling of the story of the first fire emblem game, has been that selfsame friend's introduction to the plot of that fire emblem game. which is fucking Amazing. she is my #1 top reader on that story and i love her. she constantly asks for navarre to do more stuff in the plot.
seriously, the plot of the game is thin enough on the ground that this at times strays close to an OC story, and that's something that's Very fun to have a close and highly invested friend read through as you make it. i am not lying at all when i say if she was not pumping me up to write more 24/7 this thing woulda died on the ground in february. but here we are, 7-8 episodes in out of a potential 15, and that's not including the high possibility of me attempting a season 2. i actually feel like i can finish this thing - a longfic! i never intended to write this as a longfic! hwat the hell how is this thing so long?? i am so proud of myself here.
i love this stupid fucking fic. someday i'll go back and rewrite the (bad) first chapter, and possibly append a brief description of everything that happens in the anime OVA to be a pseudo-chapter 1, because it is a Lot and the anime is Bad and i wonder all the time why i chose to make this the passion project. don't watch the anime. but if you do read my fic please
so i am deeply in love with the characters and setting of the Jugdral duology of fire emblem (Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776), deeply flawed as it is, and frankly it was only a matter of time before my crippling overambition once again took me down a peg. someday i will continue this! i have, frankly, overgrand plans. that day will not be today, because juggling two longfics is hard enough without having no end in sight. eventually this will ideally cover the entire plot (more or less) of both games, i.e. about 20 years in fiction. this is currently my least popular fic, and that makes sense - it's from a pretty unpopular pair of games, an unfinished first chapter, and mostly retells a scene that exists in canon - but i have more on the way. i have, in fact, written two or three more potential later chapters just for fun, and might end up posting some of them out of order and grouping it into a series - that might be a better and more feasible way of doing things. but i am psyched for this, despite its consistent status as my Secondary longfic.
Despite Having No Game, Thrasir Accidentally Fucks Her Way Through Half The Order Of Heroes (Apr '23-present)
my first smutfic!
this arose out of a running joke to be honest, about Thrasir fire emblem being made out of jello and being hot. i kept calling her hot, mostly for the bit, and then eventually that grew into writing...uh...this! this unending smut between thrasir and, frankly, any consenting adult woman i can think of.
i don't actually remember which came first, because this fic is loosely paired (roughly shares continuity) with an unpublished smutfic from my friend (the same friend!1) about her version of kiran (the summoner/player insert from fire emblem heroes) just absolutely railing Lif, who if you are unfamiliar is Thrasir's pal. so i was like "what if thrasir was also absolutely railing people/getting railed?" between the two of us it is sometimes privately called Goopfest. because. thrasir is made of goop. when she fucks it is a goopfest.
i'm moving on
anyway i always have ideas for this one despite still not having played past book 4 of heroes. i don't actually really like fire emblem heroes very much! the gameplay doesn't compel me, it doesn't have the tactical loop other fire emblem games do, it's gach which sucks, and i kinda have problems with a fair bit of the art - and also the writing is often just sort of boring! but it is a phenomenal framing device for fire emblem crossovers, and some of its original characters i think have a helluva lotta potential. huge ups to Oricalle on AO3 for making me think more about it, and also for having their lovely gunnthra/laegjarn fics that i was heavily inspired by for this.
both this and Twisting Fate were posted on April 20th, 2023, which is fire emblem's anniversary. i was like "i'll also post some thrasir smut as a little joke next to my serious one" and this fic has ten times the amount of hits as the other. which is fuckin hilarious.
DoMaystic Challenge 2023 (May '23)
so i learned about the domaystic challenge from reading a whole lot of Doctor Who fics (mostly Tegan and Nyssa), and some of them had been utilizing this framework and i was like woah! that seems cool! i love little domestic fluff pieces and this seems like a fun way to write some! naturally i made them all fire emblem. i only ended up fulfilling 3 of the 30 or so prompts ("Housewarming", "Volunteer", and "Police at the Door"), for Minerva and Palla, Leif and Eyvel, and Ayra and Shannan, respectively! it was fun to do, though very short and self contained. i don't know if this sort of daily-prompt format is great for me specifically, frankly, because i always am very bad with deadlines and ESPECIALLY short ones - for example, i really really tried writing something for FE Trans Week this year and completely did not end up writing more than, like, one paragraph about Azelle. sorry azelle i like you and i think you could be transfem it would be cool. maybe someday i'll finish that!
What Next?
well thank you so much for asking, me! i have two and a half fics that are actually all lined up and completed, basically ready to be posted right now! naturally, all three are fire emblem. one is a short piece about having a gay crush in the Binding Blade; one is another short piece (but smut this time!) about Monica and Edelgard featuring...uh, well, you'll see; and the third is a lengthier chapter from the eventual longfic about Ayra and Brigid set during Chapter 5 of Thracia 776! so i will probably be posting those on ao3 fairly soon, possibly even today!
i have also been writing up game review/tv episode review type things for some things that i've been liking lately over on my cohost and website - mostly doctor who, various fire emblems, and a little bit of RWBY also. i might start posting those here as well! in which case WHOO BOY i got a backlog hell yeah

"Are You Ever Overcome with Feelings of Complete and Utter Helplessness?" (Mar '23)
this was my entry into the 2023 Fire Emblem: Three Houses Femslash Exchange! this was my first time doing an exchange of any sort and it was super fun, i loved it!! that whole thing was really well organized, even though i was (technically) late on the delivery of my fic (i misread a time zone), it still got in because the requester had backed out. super fun to make this one, super fun to write monica (even though i haven't actually finished three houses OR three hopes don't tell anyone), and even more fun to read the gifts people had got me!! really made me want to do more exchanges, because this thing ruled. also, who doesn't love gay-ass monica von ochs panicking about her ladyship? i love gay-ass monica von ochs panicking about her ladyship. it's a good time. monica rules
